You know you need one but you don’t know exactly what domain name you should get. Well let me save you some time by telling you right now what you should do.

Unless you are actually the creator of a product or you own a physical store don’t spend 1 second on thinking of a creative domain name.

Face it.. Cool one liners are extremely rare to come by.  Your best bet is to focus on your keywords. Come up with your domain name based on whatever niche you are involved in or based on whatever products and services you are using.

You do have to be careful though some companies forbid you to use their brand name in your domain name. Just look at the terms of service to find out what your company will and will not allow.

These are the type of domains I am talking about..

Companypowerteam.com|Companydreamteam.com|companyeliteteam.com|  you get the idea. If your company is causing a lot of buzz.  It could be in your benefit to get the company keywords in your domain name. This way you can work on getting ranked for your companies brand keywords and get some of that traffic coming to you.

One word of caution though! Some MLM companies forbid you from using their name in any part of your promotion online. I know crazy right.. I know I don’t need to tell you this, but just in case :) Always read the Terms Of Service in any program you take part of..

Hi Larry,

Really nice tips, It’s really essential to have your keywords on your domain name as it gives you few benefits. People can recognize your services by name and it’s good for SEO purpose as well.

I use Archive.org to check the kind of content that was earlier hosted on the domain – stay away from porn and hate sites. Even a “new domain” may be registered and used few years ago.

Thanks for your tips.

Hi Rosalia, I noticed in conversation with folks is that they try and come up with witty domain names.

As such they end up getting domain names that are more difficult to get ranked.

I am glad you found the post helpful :)

I always say that keywords are very important, and of course, it’s obvious and necessary to take them into consideration while choosing a domain name.

I agree Keywords are instrumental and extremely relevent to push a product line or company. And incorporating strategic keywords in your DNS i.e. Domain Name is great way to improve your SERP’s and relating to your online audience.

Ive ranked sites highly in google with very little effort purely on the back of the keywords been in the domain name, it cant be anything else as I didnt do anything else to promote the domain – its a definitly edge.

Having the keyword in the domain name of the product or service you are trying to promote is ideal. I think it definitely has a big impact on ranking. As Larry said, be sure to take care in using a company name that is copyrighted in the domain name or you may have to deal with legal action.

Anyways thanks for the information Larry.

Nice post and a helpful video Larry :)

As an SEO myself, I know that having a keyword in the domain name is a nice little boost for ranking the site. It might not be that significance, but we all need to have everything we can right out of the bat to make the best first step possible.

I always try to get my exact keyword as the domain name with the “-” or some irrelevant characters at the end like “x” or “z” if the exact domain is not available. There’s always more room to enter :)

Thanks again for the post, I appreciate it!

Duy.

Hey Larry,

I couldn’t agree more with your tips for buying domain names. It’s important for any webmaster to know that keyword rich domains are much more effective than domains without keywords. Thanks for sharing the fundamentals when it comes to domain buying.

I am relatively new in internet marketing and this post is very helpful to me. However, should your domain name be an exact match with the keyword or should it just be included in the domain? Does It make much difference?

Reply

Larry Rivera November 3, 2011 at 11:41 am

Twitter:
Hi Sean, that really depends on what is actually available. If you should happen to find the exact keywords for a domain name awesome that would be good.

For example: wouldn’t it be nice to own the domain networkmarketing.com lols..

Just make sure whatever keywords you are using that there is actually traffic there.

A suitable and best keywords is very important to include in your domain name because it makes other minds that site site belongs to that work and its really easy to keep in mind if you include keywords similar to your business.
thanks for this useful information. keep up the right and great work.

Larry,

I like these tips but I think its not that risky to use a brand name in your domain with some other keywords in domain, I see most people have domains containing famous brands name in it.

Actually they try to sell their niche or service or getting affiliate from that company, and yeah I like that you highlighted that having keywords in your domain name is good, I totally agree with that.

Thanks

Roger

Thank u for the video and helpful tips Larry. I usually do my domain research in MNF so I have to check for the local searches, competition etc. Its too risky to use brand name because they paid for that name and using it might cause you trouble. So its better to stay away from it.

In my opinion a domain should be short and brandable. To many people make the mistake of getting some keyword rich domains. I think people dont like this kind of domainnames to klick on as they used to be. Better short and brandable :)

Hi jasmine, you have point. I would like to point out though you can always use anchor text. Also if you are getting search engine traffic you wont have to worry about that. Ultimately it really depends on how you going to use the domain. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Domain names based on keywords is always a good investment. I used to bank on deleted domain names with pagerank. The page ranks go away after a while.

:) Off-late, I have found a efficient way of selecting domains based on keywords. I search for my keywords in Google Adwords Keyword tool. I copy all the 100 keywords that appear and use some text tool to remove space between words. I then copy this onto Godaddy’s bulk domain tool. That provides the list of available domains. I think the limit is 500 lines.

Interesting post I was reading last week about matching keyword domain names. I hadn’t considered looking at the age of the domains though. Do you mean domains that people are selling? Would this not be more expensive?

Pete November 18, 2011 at 5:18 am

I would say that ensuring you can purchase all the TLD’s you could possibly want is the most essential thing when buying domains. OK, so perhaps for the next 10 years you will only be targetting traffic in your country, however what do you do if you are REALLY successful, you’ve gained majority share in the market and plateaued. You still want to grow however and going oversea’s represents a huge new market for you.

This is when having the .com as well as your country domain is essential – Google will NOT punish a site for duplicate content if it shares the same domain name over several TLD’s. Now, if someone else owns that and is aware of your successfull business on a national level how much do you think they will charge you for the .com domain… £100′s? No, £1000′s? Possibly, £1,000,000 – more like it.

I know this doesn’t apply to most, but if your aiming big from the start, don’t make this simple yet costly mistake.
