Are You Selling Facts Or Telling Stories?

Why You May Not Be Having The Success You Are Looking For

It dawned on me today that there are many people out there that really don’t understand a very simple concept. One that has been used probably for centuries.  Today I had a really good conversation with a gentleman who is interested in my joining my Empower Network Business.. (YA for me! :) )

What I found even more interesting though is how I ultimately ended up on the phone with him.  There was an interesting e-book I read years ago called Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard. In it he talks about being the hunted and not the hunter. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend picking up a copy of it.

I’ve applied what he taught in my business and I have to say that it’s not as hard as everyone things to become the hunted. With that said on with my story….

So I was on the phone with this gentleman because he found me because of another person saying I was a good mentor on the Warriors Forum.  I didn’t even know someone said that about me. But I appreciate it though. I am not the type of person who likes to be praised. In fact some of my close friends think I am silly because I don’t talk about some of my experiences more.

But that’s because I feel that self – praise is lame at best and not at all attractive. I also feel that a true testimony is one that isn’t asked for. So I was rather surprised to find out that I got one on the warriors forum.

I actually found me mentioned twice. It’s funny how things come full circle wouldn’t you agree? I did snag images of both things said..

This one is from someone I don’t even know. But they brought up something I said (Just goes to show you, careful what you say you never know who is listening and watching.)

..This Next One totally floored me, because I know this guy and he never mentioned to me he gave me a testimony..

Just click the image to read what it says…

Now neither of these 2 screen shots are current they are actually back in 2010, it’s now 2013 and I am just now learning about them. From someone I might add who I never met before.

So on with my story….

He ( The gentleman) contacted me via Facebook. He asked me if I had some time to talk to him about empower network. So I called him up :) . I don’t call people ever, accept when they already show interest in what I am doing, it’s at that point the phone call is always a pleasant experience.

…He told me his problem,

He said: I like network marketing, I have only been able to bring a few people in my business and then I am unable to get anyone else

So I asked him what he was doing. After he told me I instantly realized what his issue was. It’s something I learned from Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn and other mentors. But it was something that really hit home after I got done watching a training in Empower Network’s Costa Rica training.

He (the gentleman) was selling facts about his company. How great the compensation plan is, how great the product is. The number of potential customers etc.. That type of thing. Interestingly I see the same thing online all the time.

For some reason people actually believe that the facts matter. Don’t get me wrong, if the product is good, the product is good. However nobody and I do mean nobody cares about that. What people really listen to though is a good story.

…I bet your still reading this or skimming it right?

It’s because hopefully I am telling you a decent story and your following it. It’s a true story, it’s not some made up saga… But hopefully you see my point. People stay around longer when you can engage them. You engage people and warm them up to you by for a lack of better words.. Telling a good story.

The Pitch To Get In My Deal :)

I don’t know where you are at in life. But if your reading this blog I am sure it has something or another to do with making money online. Over the years I have “tried” just about everything. After a few years of failing and learning what works and what doesn’t work, I realized it all comes down to what you actually know and who you know.

Even though I know a lot I know I don’t know everything. But I doing pretty good online. If you would like to be mentored by someone who is approachable and does have workable solutions.. Click my link and join my business. I would love to work with you!

Great story Larry. I agree with you on most points however I personally wholeheartedly believe in self-promotion. Now it has to be done in a tasteful way, but if you aren’t willing to talk about your achievement than neither will anyone else.

I like reading your post because they are entertaining. Who wants read something that is boring and the truth of the matter facts are usually boring. If you can evoke emotion from people they will remember you. Give them a bunch of facts and they might remember the message, most likely not the messenger.

That’s so interesting, your title is so close to the saying my mentor uses:

    Facts tell, stories sell.

I totally agree with you. The best business I have done came from the golf course where I told people what I did through stories in a casual way. Those have been the most loyal and fun clients.

People easily bought stories that they seem so interesting and motivational even if the truth is it is just stories. It caught their concern and often relate their selves on the situation.

Facts can fall flat, be distant. It can be difficult to translate a set of facts to your own experience, to imagine what your life might look like with some product or service. A story is different, is relatable. You can take the experience of a story and imagine yourself a part of it, so stories naturally sell better, though facts are needed to supplement it. Having one or the other won’t sell effectively, but stories with facts can close the deal.

I am the gentlemen that Larry spoke to!!! I don’t think he knows I have been reading his blog. (GREAT BLOG by the way Larry :D) To be honest I am looking for a Coach/Mentor. And I have always liked the Warrior Forum for Reviews and just a great place to find information about internet marketing. I came across the first post above and thought WoW. This is a guy seems like he has been through it. So I put his name in the Search icon only to find the one other post above. If you know the Warrior Forum you know that those guys and gals don’t just give out PRAISE unless it’s warranted. Realizing that Larry wasn’t part of the forum. I Googled him and found his Facebook Page. I sent him a Friend Request and messaged him. He messaged me back within 10 seconds. I asked if we could talk about his business and he called me all within 5 minutes. When we connected: And Yes he told me his Story which was impressive! But the more impressive part of the conversation came when he made me realize that people like Stories and connecting with a leader. Larry is definitely a leader.

Facts are what they are facts. If someone is reading about a company and want to find out more then that is fine. Your right though you cannot seel with facts. To sell you need to be able to sell. This is an art form that some people find easy and some people will never master. This goes for online as well just as much as elsewhere.. Your right a good salesman will keep you engaged and get you right to the end game where you sign on the dotted line.

Long live the story teller thanks lee
