Network Marketing List Building Revealed

Often times it is the obvious that is often missed. Getting people to want to be on your network marketing list isn’t really that hard. All that is required is that you supply information that they are looking for.

First – If you have to bribe someone to be on your list, there is a really good chance that they aren’t really interested in anything you have to say or sell. Instead they are interested in getting their free gift/ebook/video etc…

Some of the more popular blogs I visit simply have a place for people to opt in who want to stay in the loop. You want to fill your network marketing list with people who are genuinely interested in what you are doing. The best way to do that is to simply tell your readers to opt in to get all of your updates, reviews, tips etc…

What I mean by that is unless you are providing *real value the only reason people are opting into your list is to get something for free. I do it all the time at a grocery store when they give out free samples. I never buy what they are giving away but I always take one.

Building your network marketing list is bigger than whatever network marketing business you are in.  When it comes down to it, you can make more money with a small list of people who are really interested in you and what you are doing than you can with a list of thousands of people who  just want your free stuff.

If you are putting together a good blog you will naturally attract people who will want to follow what you are doing. You know you are on to something when you are building a list and the only bait you are using is your content and a contact form.

The Real Value Of Your Network Marketing List

Building a email marketing list is probably the most important thing you can do for your entire business. While many guru’s will tell you that it’s getting harder and harder to make money using  email marketing. What many of them really mean is.

“People are getting tired of our bullshit so email marketing isn’t working for us anymore”.

My friends, you can’t even put a price tag on the value of your network marketing list.

Remember we were all newbies at one time or another. We were all confused at one time or another. Help people solve their problems via your blogging and people will naturally want to be on your list.

I would Like To Leave You With This Last Piece Of Network Marketing List Building Wisdom

It doesn’t matter what product you are selling. Nor does it matter what the compensation plan looks like. If your enthusiasm for it is weak, then your income will also be weak. Not only do you really need to be passionate about what you are doing you also need to be an expert.

Here are 3 things that can help you become an expert:

  1. Put The Time In – There is no replacement for experience. You need to realize that all of us start knowing nothing at all. It does take hundreds of of hours to really become a expert. The saying “practice makes perfect” is true. You need to make hundreds of blog post, come up with thousands of headlines etc. This is what makes you an expert.
  2. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone – In order to learn the important stuff you have to be willing to do it yourself even if you don’t really want to. It is thru this “practice” you will learn new things. If you haven’t had any success online yet. Stop doing what you are doing and try something new. The only growth that happens in stagnate water is toxic.
  3. Be The Guru – I really didn’t start becoming a good martial artist until I started teaching other people. As soon as I was able to teach someone else what I was learning I started teaching. Granted because I didn’t know that much myself, I didn’t charge anything I just taught for free. They got knowledge I got a training partner and was able to re -enforce what I was learning. I thought it was a fair trade. Once you are the guru in the eyes of the people that are reading and watching your content. You will find it much easier to build your network marketing list.

The 4 Stages Of Compentence

  1. Unconscious Incompetence
The individual does not understand or know how to do something and does not necessarily recognize the deficit. They may deny the usefulness of the skill. The individual must recognise their own incompetence, and the value of the new skill, before moving on to the next stage. The length of time an individual spends in this stage depends on the strength of the stimulus to learn.
  2. Conscious Incompetence
Though the individual does not understand or know how to do something, he or she does recognize the deficit, as well as the value of a new skill in addressing the deficit. The making of mistakes can be integral to the learning process at this stage.
  3. Conscious Competence
The individual understands or knows how to do something. However, demonstrating the skill or knowledge requires concentration. It may be broken down into steps, and there is heavy conscious involvement in executing the new skill.
  4. Unconscious Competence
The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it has become “second nature” and can be performed easily. As a result, the skill can be performed while executing another task. The individual may be able to teach it to others, depending upon how and when it was learned.

To truly Profit On Knowledge: You must apply the knowledge that is in your head to action. By continually practicing what you are learning you move closer and closer to becoming the expert. This is when people will “want” to opt into your capture forms. Your network marketing list will be the only thing that bullet proofs your online business.

Isn’t email marketing considered to be spam?
In my opinion every mail that I don’t want is considered spam… so why would I use this technique?
From what I’ve talked on the forums, it seems that i am not the only one who believes this.

      Hi Matei,

No email marketing isn’t considered spam. Spam is unsolicited email.

For Example: There are programs that scrap email addresses, there are people that harvest email addresses with the sole purpose of sending promotions. That is spamming.

If someone decides they want more information from me. I am only sending them stuff because they asked me to send them stuff.

Also, a person is always free to unsubscribe from my mailing list. In fact every email I send someone has an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.

Another sign of real spam is when you get email messages in your inbox and there is no unsubscribe link at the bottom. Just Saying…

Good point Larry. There are ethical ways to do it and unethical ways to do it. I really get bogged down with sorting through emails for that one that I really want to read. Sometimes I feel like closing down the email address completely, but then, moving over real subscriptions is just the same drag.

You make a lot of sense Larry and I concur that building something worthy on line and of value takes, effort, discipline, passion and authenticity. I think there is a big wide opportunity for those who want to share their passion and give to genuinely help others and master what they do. It is precisely because wealth creation is often not the starting point that makes the difference to what you give and how you market online . This is a contrast to all the same copy cat…make it type hype websites that make my blood boil and send me running….!

Hi Mark, the first internet network marketing I got involved with, I had a 30 week email series that promoted nothing but the business opportunity I was in. in my earlier years I wasted my network marketing list. I didn’t fully grasp the idea of what to do with all those leads.

The result was I had a small list of about 8000 people who wouldn’t buy anything from me. I can’t even tell you how many unsubscribes I got.

It wasn’t till about 2006 that I combined blogging with my list building, it was at that point I actually started seeing money roll in. It was also around the time that people started “as Frank Kern Would say” buying my shit 🙂

Thats true, a natural list can prevail, and be more valuable. I guess we as humans are stuck on the notion of numbers, and the bigger the better. The more, the better but in reality whats the real value of that list. Its just like twitter… some people have lots of followers but yet they forced the follows, so the percentage of those that will be real value is much less in that bigger list.

One of the martial Arts I teach is Wing Chun. In Wing Chun we believe in economy of motion.

This means to get rid of all the stuff that slows us down and only use what is the quickest most efficient way.

Your right, for the most part we tend to think bigger is better. In martial arts reality we can prove that isn’t the case.

The same goes for list building. It’s safe to say that you can make more money from 500 people that adore what you do vs 25000 people who could care less.

I agree on doing a less aggressive approach. I think this is one of the reasons why email marketing is failing. Sometimes I give in and reply to some of the emails but am discouraged when I am not sure a human is answering my replies. Building a strong relationship with clients is very important. Also, you reminded me that it is okay to make mistakes. I should accept that sometimes I can’t master something in just a short time.

I simply love this article. I am constantly preaching a very similar message, that I do not think is heard enough.

I have made a living mainly through email marketing for over 7 years now. I have seen a lot of guys come and go. The people who blast peoples inbox with worthless crap are those that are going. (and good riddence)

Providing quality in my messages and trying to be a niche thought leader is something I have always tried to do.

When you provide quality input you get quality results. Really it is the only way to do it properly.

Anyhow I really like the way you think (I even brought up the 4 stages of competence in a recent post…though for a completely different example)

    I will be back.

    Cheers,

I have three lists currently and, surprisingly, the best one I have is the one for my PLR site – actually. Even though I have a list of about 3,000 for another blog.

Why? I’m way more personal on the PLR list because I know EXACTlY who I’m talking to. I made the mistake of just gathering people on the other site and the problem is that so much of the emails are hit and miss that I’m still experimenting with it just to get a decent open rate.

In the end, I think it’s good to put up a bit of a barrier for signing up so you only get people that are going to be active instead of freebie hunters, ya know?

Larry your advice about the value of a newsletter list parallels what I have read by all those who are focused on monetization. Not sure I would agree that those who are “bribed” are not really interested. If the the bribe is, say, a free e-book that is on target for their interest and consistent with the content of your site, these folks will actually appreciate getting periodic offers. But you are right – the list is the thing. I plan to use Aweber someday – and like your idea of using a contact form and compelling content.

Building a profitable email list is something hard to do.
First of all you “must” provide good content, and if you stick to your niche, you can get a good quality list of potential buyers

If you use Aweber or other similar newsletter assistant, you can reduce the numbers of “unsollecited” emails that you send your list, especially when you’re trying to sell something

It really depends on your method of marketing. If you are using lead capture pages in safelist or traffic exchanges then yes free gifts are great incentives.

Creating a incentive for a facebook fanpage is a good idea.

Note: I never bought anything because someone gave me an incentive. I have always bought stuff because I actually wanted it to begin with.

I tend to only buy from folks online who over deliver on value and customer support.

Nowadays, everyone and their mothers are giving incentives for joining their list. The real trick is to have a unique selling point or USP for short. It is your unique selling point that will get folks flocking to you.

As humans, we’re kinda naturally “standoffish” right? We seem to be a little closed, reserved, and protected. If we let go of all that, and really learn to “serve” others – then the world seems to be opened. New opportunities come our way, and we’re “taken care of.”

It reminds me of the time spent answering emails. I spend much of my time answering emails. A whole lot, in fact. But by doing so – I’m able to craft extra blog posts simply from answers I’ve given in email, as well as giving pure, undiluted help!

Just love what the internet teaches us about being better people.

    Hi Larry,
I have just started blogging so I am still in the learning process, so I haven’t done much research on email marketing, much less build a list. After reading your article though, I now see how important it will be for me to figure it out! I do believe that good customer service and genuine appreciation for your readers is the key to building a good foundation. Thanks for the advice.
