Barriers To Personal Growth And Development

DSC_0165Your doing everything possible yet you keep getting nowhere? More than likely it because you have road blocks to personal growth and development that you probably don’t even realize are there.  There are tons of people who have issues with this. These can cause them not to achieve their goals in life. It doesn’t matter what is holding you back, the good news is with a few changes to the way you live and your mindset.

More than likely the main culprit is your own imagination. What is possible is only limited by the vision and determination of the person.  If you think it isn’t going to work then it probably won’t work. If you believe something can work and you put effort into it then there is a good chance you will succeed, simple as that.

Another issue that can hold you back is your past failures.  Living in your past failures halts your personal growth and development.  It’s normal to get stuck mentally living in your failures, but in order to grow you have to let the past be the past and move forward into the now.

Another common barrier to personal growth and development is our support systems, or lack of support. Negative messages from family, friends, and co-workers will only serve to bring us down, not lift us up. Surrounding yourself with people who are like minded and striving for success in their careers and their life will help you to do the same.

Whether you get support from an organized group, your friends, or your family makes no difference. The support that you get, the motivational pep talks and the shoulder to cry on when things go wrong, will help you to realize all of your goals and overcome your barriers to personal growth and development. The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination......365/365

One of the less common barriers to personal growth and development is the basic lack of planning. Many people go through life taking what is handed to them, without ever setting down goals and striving to exceed expectations. Setting goals, figuring out how to reach those goals, and making a timeline for success is a vitally important and often ignored barrier to personal growth and development.

Remember, whatever your personal barriers to personal growth and development, you can overcome your obstacles. Any person who sets goals, creates a timeline for success, has adequate support, and strives for excellence can overcome these barriers to personal growth and development and achieve the success that all people deserve.

If you need further assistance in personal growth and development, you can find a lot of information on the internet or in books through your local library or your favorite online book store. Personal development coaches, career development profiles, and other personal growth and development tools can also help you to overcome obstacles and achieve what seemed like the impossible.

I think you have summed up everything in that one sentence ‘If you think it isn’t going to work then it probably won’t work.’ Trust me it is so true, being optimist about yourself is one of the most important things that you can really work on and achieve everything!

I am a dreamer, not a realist though, but i have a positive way of approaching things, and it really helps me in feeling good about myself! Enjoyed your post Larry!

I’ve been reading a lot of articles lately about business, marketing, and your’s about personal growth. A common thread I see over and over is “setting goals.” It’s something that can be so simple (e.g. grab a piece of paper and make a list 1 through 10 or whatever), but it’s never easy for me. Ironically, I get so busy I feel like I don’t have time to make a list of things to do. (That sounds funny, doesn’t it!). So when your post mentioned how a lack of planning is a barrier to personal development, I thought “YEP!”. So, thanks for your very good post!

Very analytical post which covers every points that are obstacles in our personal growth and development. To overcome from these barriers you need be optimistic and you need a person and group who always encourage you, Everybody can discourage you but it’s really hard to find someone who can encourage you all the time.

Sometimes negative messages from family, friends and others encourages you to do something exceptional so that you can silent you critics. Again you need to be positive yourself only then you can do exceptional.

I agree with you completely. But the most important barrier among those ones that you have mentioned is the one that deals with family’s or friends’ opinions. And from my own experience I’d like to say that this is the most strong influence. It’s not a secret for everyone that people pay much attention on public opinion, and especially when we talk about our close people…. If they don’t believe in our success or possible opportunities, then it can become a serious problem

Hi Jeanie, your right friends and family members are strong influences. It is important to always surround yourself with people who are supportive of what you do.

It’s good to self-evaluate and see where the source or your success and failures stems from. For some time, fear of past failures was almost crippling but once I established the cause of this failure I was able to shut it off and it has made a world of difference. Thanks for the article!

Hey Cory thanks for stopping by and commenting. You made me think of some of my favorite failure quotes.

“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

“Half of the failures in life come from pulling one’s horse when he is leaping.” -Thomas Hood

“I failed my way to success.” – Thomas Edison

“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” – William Shakespeare

“Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success.”
- Napoleon Hill

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”
- Newell D. Hillis

They fail, and they alone, who have not striven.
Thomas Bailey Aldrich

We learn wisdom from failure much more than success. We often discover what we will do, by finding out what we will not do.
Samuel Smiles

Well said Larry – I used to think that having the necessary technical skills were all you needed to be successful online. I am slowly learning that it takes a lot more than that. It takes the proper mindset and discipline in order to put your plan into action and remain consistent with it. As soon as doubt starts to creep in, it ultimately becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Great video training by the way, keep up the good work!

Great post Larry. It is the same whether you are talking about online success, or success in any undertaking, of course …it begins with having a purpose in life, developing the right mindset, and writing down (and persistently working toward) our goals.

I love the ‘failure’ (or more correctly ‘success’) quotes you list too. They are all great men who understood the importance of embracing failure in order to achieve success!

Now this is what I call an excellent post. I am an optimist dreamer and I can picture where I want to find myself in the next decade, but neither do I have a short term plan nor a route of how to get to my plans. Whenever I set goals and fail to achieve them, my confidence level takes a real blow. But I certainly agree with you that a lack of planning is the biggest hurdle in someone’s development.

Hi Wez, Failing is a huge part of learning. In fact one would say you are not able to learn unless you fail.

So don’t beat yourself up over failing. Take some time and think about some of the things that you could have done better and next time around ace them. The most important thing is to not give up on yourself. :)

Larry,

My favorites here are not setting goals and letting past failures hold you back. I think far to many people do this. Without goals all you have are nebulous dreams. If you want something to happen you NEED to set a concrete plan in place to make it happen.

As for failures, hey, they happen to the best of us. The difference between winners and the “not-winners” is that the successful people realize that failures happen, learn from them and move on. Simply making sure to not make the same mistake again. On the other hand some people will internalize failure and let it eat at them and keep them from going on. It is never failure that is the problem, but reaction to failure.

I have found in my life if I can visualize something eventually I will see it happen.

I’ve always thought that fear of failure was the biggest obstacle to success. Often times, I feel that sense of hesitency to try new things or take a risk because of that fear. But I work to overcome that and when I do that I find that the fear is often much worse than the reality. In reality, taking action and even failing at times actually helps to move one closer to success.

You really are right, when the nayers surrounds you, more likely you will now grow wisely. I have stop working a 9to5 work for the reason that most of the employees working in our division cannot get along well and I am always on the middle. So as not to create any enemies among both side and to prevent a stressful day of work I decided to resign and stay at home and I change my number just not to hear from negative feedback’s from friends and also no more destructive criticism to hear about my former co employees. That way I become more productive and so much enjoying my online work. If I stayed on that company for a time, I am fully aware I will be down morally little by little. Anyway you really got a great post. Keep on going with this and keep on being a blessing to others by sharing positive thoughts to your readers.

There are definitely a lot of things that can act us barriers between reaching our full potential. Many get discouraged easily if they fail early and then they never try again while some are negative from the outset and never stray from the beaten path. If you think you can’t win, you’ve already lost. Always believe you can do something and then put in the hard work and you will definitely stand a good chance of succeding.
