How To Remove ICQ From Firefox

I am not sure why ICQ decided to take over my firefox browser, but it did.  At first I thought maybe it was some kind of virus or spyware.  Long painful story short, I started to try and trouble shoot the issue.

Usually I can figure out these things rather easily. Not this time though this one really had me stumped.. The truth is I don’t even know what all the features in firefox does. I only know how to use the parts of it I need. So I am still unsure how ICQ was able to hijack my system.

Getting Rid Of The ICQ Search Function

So the first culprit I tried getting rid of was the ICQ search function. I figured out how to get rid of that but that still didn’t solve my entire problem. I made a video showing how you can remove the ICQ search feature as well as other search features inside Firefox.

I thought “YA!” I solved my problem. But ICQ wasn’t done with me yet. Little did I know that the little bugger was also on my toolbar. That was causing some major grief for me with some of the websites I use.

For Example: There were occassions where I would type in a url and I would get an ICQ error page. This was starting to get annoying because I wasn’t getting those errors on windows explorer.

Getting Rid Of ICQ Toolbar In FireFox

Finally I decided to get off my lazy butt and start snooping around google to see if I could Figure out what the issue was. Eventually I did find the solution to my problem as explained in this video.

I remember reading about ICQ error, that some users were not able to connect to ICQ because of some unknown error. I’ve still not encountered this problem so this post definitely is an eye opener for me Larry. Thanks for sharing on a brilliant topic.

Happen to me before, not this same problem but my Firefox was working perfectly until I install a SEO addons and my browser start acting funny. So I just re-install Firefox and then install SEO addons and it worked perfectly. Not really sure why.

I hate it when something like that clings on to my browser, refusing to let go and keeps on affecting my browsing experience. I’m surprised ICQ is still around too. I used to use it back in the nineties but I thought it was discontinued sometime during the last decade as no one I knew ever used it nor did I hear it get promoted with any software in this way either.

Often times you get these toolbars installing because of rushing through an install process. One tip I have… whenever you do an install of any program try to go with the manual option, that way you choose the settings, often times when you go with the ‘automatic’ settings on an install, toolbars like these will often be checked to install, which is why they appear. I’ve been through this before myself, it is rather annoying!

I have had this same problem before, and after going through all kind test and error and i finally solved this issue.
1.Uninstall all icq related such as the toolbar..you can go through search to manually delete
any files related to icq.Best if you can uninstall it with Revo uninstaller.
2.Uninstall Firefox and again after uninstall firefox make sure you go to search and manually
delete Firefox and Mozilla left over files such the registry etc ect..That means you have to search Mozilla first and later Firefox.Once you are sure that no left over of Mozilla or Firefox files ,Reinstall fresh Firefox as usual…I hope this help..
