Tips for Getting Advertisers for Your Site

Advertising vs PR

Direct advertising is one of the best ways of monetizing a website. However, getting advertisers for your website and eventually closing the deals, is not a simple matter. The following are some things that will attract advertisers to your website.

A popular site

Before getting direct advertising offers, you need to have a site with a significant amount of traffic. If your site attracts less than 1000 unique daily visitors, you need to work on increasing your traffic first before looking for advertisers. Additional factors such as RSS subscribers, Alexa rank and Google Pagerank could also help.

A clear focus

You may have a very popular site. But unless the website has a defined audience and a very clear niche, advertisers won’t be very interested in it. Advertisers want to get a message across to a very specific audience.

A professional design

If you would like to monetize your site through direct advertisers, you need to spend some money to get a professional looking design. Since they are going to associate their service or product with your site, advertisers would want to work with a site which looks attractive.

Give sponsors good visibility

Not all themes and templates will be appropriate for selling direct advertising. You need to have a good idea of the type of advertising you intend to sell (e.g. 125×125 banners, 468×60 banners or text links), and design your site with those objectives in mind.

‘Advertise Here’ page

An ‘Advertise Here’ page is very vital. This page can be used to provide information about the site, such as traffic, audience, and other factors which would be of interest to potential advertisers. Make sure you place a link to that page in a very visible spot. This is a strategy that I use to find advertisers for my blog which features ediet discounts and weight watchers coupons.

Standard letter to advertisers

Though some advertisers will get in touch with you after seeing your ‘Advertise Here’ page, many of them will need to be approached directly. Therefore, you will need to craft a standard letter which will be used to contact advertisers. Though there is no particular way of doing this, the following guidelines could be helpful:

  • Introduce yourself and explain briefly what your email is about
  • Explain your reasons for contacting them and how they can benefit
  • Give information about your site (subscribers, traffic, audience, topic etc.)
  • Give information about the advertising alternatives (monthly price, number of advertisers, location on the website etc.)

This information will help advertisers make a decision.

Accepting payments

You may have everything in order. However, if your advertisers can’t make payments easily, you might end up losing many deals. The best option in this case is PayPal.

I like the point about “having a clear focus”.

It is not uncommon for me to visit a website and occasionally have trouble figuring out exactly what the blog or site is about.

Having a website that is too diversified in its topic or theme can be a conversion killer IF you’re not careful.

    Great post…:)

Many people underestimate the power of the “advertise here” page and that’s what makes them miss a lot of opportunities. I personally use the buysellads services and it manages to find me advertisers even with some of my low trafficked blogs.

It really is important to have a ‘Advertise Here’ page if you are wanting to get advertising revenue. And its super important to sell your self as quickly as you can so that the buyers are ready to throw cash your way without hesitation. The advertise page should be a full complete selling pitch in my opinion so there is no doubt from the buyer when he emails you ready to buy some ad space! I would highly recommend anybody to also research the competition for your particular niche and see what they are doing so you are able to be a step above them.

I’ve seen great blogs failing to attract advertisers. Why? Because they didn’t have a clear direction, they didn’t have a definite product they were selling. Advertisers need to be able to rely on numbers, they expect consistency, this assures them they won’t lose money.
But if a blog is in chaos, well it becomes kind of difficult to give insurances.

You have raised almost everything that is good to now before you close the deal. But to have a long term collaboration with a advertiser it ‘s important to track the visitors you are sending to the advertiser.

With this information you can have a good ground for the next month when the advertiser is in the doubt of advertising one more month.

So have in mind to keep tracking even when you got an advertiser!
