VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is communication technology capitalizing on the internet. Messages, whether voice, SMS or fax, are sent through internet channels. Computers are not the only devices that have access to VoIP, with technology constantly evolving portable devices like smartphones and other devices which are not phones may be configured to use VoIP.
Skype and ooVoo are among the many VoIP software available to internet users. Skype, as a matter of fact, have more than 350 million registered users and remains as one the leading VoIP software. OoVoo, on the other hand, has 35 million users as of October 2011 which is pretty impressive for a software launched only in 2006. It is then pretty normal to put this two against each other, thus beginning the ooVoo vs. Skype battle.
Both Skype and ooVoo have broken traditional modes of communication. You can communicate with loved ones, colleagues and other individuals regardless of their geographical location which will only cost you your regular internet bill. VoIP software such as these two has become essential not only in communicating with distant family members, but also in monitoring business development, long-distance conferences, and other-business/ professional related activities.
Given that each have their own features, which side are you in the ooVoo vs. Skype debate? Before making any kind of decision, it is important to understand the features of each VoIP software.

Both Skype and ooVoo can be used not only computers, but also on mobile phones and tables. Skype, in addition to these gadgets, can also be configured to be used on home phones or on TVs. OoVoo, on the other hand, may not have all features available for Mac-users. Given that Skype has been in the market longer than the other, its experience in technology is evident.
Further in ooVoo vs. Skype debate, both services have text, video chats, video recording which are useful for conducting online interviews and presentations, screen and file sharing. However, in terms on making calls ooVoo can only call mobile phones within the US, Canada, Hong Kong and China. When calling landlines, ooVoo can contact those in the US, Germany, Hong Kong, China and Israel. With Skype, users can contact anybody anywhere in the world, which of course, will be subject to fees.
However, ooVoo can allow a user to call a person who does not have the ooVoo software installed. The service provides a link where friends sans ooVoo software can click to interact with the user. In ooVoo, video conference can include as many as six people while Skype can host up to nine other people.
When weighing the ooVoo vs. Skype debate, the winner will depend on what you need and what service meets those needs. Individuals may claim that the other is better than the other, but bottomline is that both have aspects they can improve on and both have features better than the other. It is just a matter of finding which one suits your communication demands and needs better.

I’ve never even heard of OoVoo, so I would definitely have to vote Skype in this battle. Skype is just absolutely awesome. Not only can I keep in touch for free with my friends from all over the world, via video conferencing and IM chats, but I can call their landlines for significantly cheaper than any other service. I love Skype!
I use them both. I have been with skype the longest. I use both of them. I still use skype because i have over 4000 contacts. I like oovoo more though.
I use Skype mainly for business calls and OoVoo mainly to talk to my friends, so I suppose you are right… it mostly just depends what you want to achieve when communicating.
Oovoo has better video conferencing services.. So I actually use it the other way around..
I prefer to use SKYPE as my messenger. I never heard oovoo and how do they compare to a high standard one.
So far I’ve used only Skype, I’m satisfied with it. Since I am accustomed with its facilities, I doubt I’ll try other VOIP software.
I haven’t used Oovoo before but it sounds impressive. I have been using skype all along and it hasn’t disappointed. I will get Oovoo and install it and see how it works compared to skype.
I’m inclined to go for Skype. Have been using it for years and it didn’t give me any problems. Perhaps, if I’ve got time (don’t know when I will have it though… lol..), I will also try ooVoo out and see if it can meet my expectations.
OoVoo is quite a new plugin for me however i am using Skype from time being and it really works better for me. definition of VOIP is also quite new for me as like ooVoo.
As for me, then I prefer Skype. I’m much satisfied with its quality and number of oportunities
I think that Skype is number 1 in it. I use only it for communication with my friends or people from other countries
I am not familiar with voip, because recently I am using the Skype to talk to my clients and friends. the easiest communication software to use.
Both are great! I kind of like oovoo more.
It seems from the comments that people who have USED ooVoo like it better or as much as Skype. I have and use both as some contacts have only ooVoo, others only Skype. Quality is basically the same for me but ooVoo seems slightly easier to set up and use. I don’t tie my Skype to Facebook, etc. so that feature is not relevant to me. Both of their charging systems (fees, what they charge for, etc.) are confusing for me so mostly I just use the free features.
Oovoo in my opinion. Less lag, better quality. Watch this video to see what I mean.

This is the first time I’ve encountered Oovoo. My team and I have been using Skype because it is more familiar and it’s a VoIP software that’s been tried and tested. But based on your blog, I can say that both has its own advantages and weak points. Who knows, maybe we’ll give Oovoo a try as well. For now, we’d like to give Slack a try. We’re also looking into , it’s a text messaging service designed for businesses.
Awesome, both oovoo and skype have unique advantages.
