There’s that buzz word in connection with Internet Marketing again, “social media”. Yes, you guessed it right. Everywhere you turn these days, you see guys like me going all out, guns-blazing, saying “social media is where it’s at chum” ๐
The question is, how many of you have actually had it dawn upon you that social media IS actually where fast, viral success in Internet Marketing “is at”?
There is more truth to any claims that social media has redefined internet marketing standards today than in anything else you hear out there.
The ability to tap into social networks on the fly, search for people in your niche, communicate with them as easily as throwing up a “mention” with their Twitter Screen Name in it, has revolutionized the way communications are taking place online today. Isn’t it fantastic how all you need to do to get across to someone of interest on Twitter, is to post a tweet with their screen name mentioned in it? How powerful is that!?
Yes, many of you will come back and say: “but there are hundreds of thousands of people doing exactly that on a daily basis, so it won’t work so well will it? Internet Marketing needs something more powerful that just a tweet with a dog-tag ;)”
Well, in social media’s defence, that is strictly not true.
You see, people who’ve taken to the path of internet marketing for any reason whatsoever, have been mislead by many existing internet marketers, mislead by following in their most “repetitive” footsteps.
You can’t get someone’s attention by posting the typical “How to rule the world in 10 minutes” kind of howto-infested tweets!
You have got to be more creative that things like that, and I’m sure you are. If you can spell your name, if you can you give your own mates advice on matters close to them and you, and if you can do that without using the words: “Hey Friend, here’s how you can solve your problems overnight!”, I’m pretty darn sure you can replicate that manner in your tweets and emails to your subscribers too ๐
To be effective with social media based internet marketing, you need to “speak” to whoever it is you’re targeting.
You must sound original, and not talk “crap” like John here to your right ๐ It is definitely possible to stand out in a crowd if you get noticed as the only one, or one of a measly few, who is making actual sense and is genuine enough to sound like they have something for you but don’t want to make an advertising circus out of it.
Tweets, if posted correctly, with no “how to this and how to that”, but genuine, personalized advice that is catchy, appealing and sounds like it came from someone who’s experienced for themselves what it is they are tweeting about, your tweets, as small as they may be at 140 characters, are bound to get the attention you need to viralize your business.
If you can personalize your “marketing speak”, if you can make people read your tweets or status updates even in passing, only to go “hmm.. that sounds refreshing..”, you’ve hit the free traffic jackpot that most people in internet marketing don’t survive long enough to witness ๐
Make that a regular practice, and your social media presence will eventually reach levels where you can really afford to use the word “Autopilot” without fearing a rotten egg being thrown your way a few seconds later ๐

Hi Ali, well you’re preaching to the converted with me. In fact I probably over did the social media thing when I suddenly realised the potential for business and career networking – but I eventually learned what works and what doesn’t and I wrote an article about it on my blog not long ago, (linked to).
I can understand newcomers being overwhelmed by it all though, and even though you make the point very well that: even though it seems like the market is saturated with ‘perfect’ social networkers in ‘your niche’, in reality it’s not; it will seem a bit unbelievable at first to many.
But at least I can back you up.
In all endeavours there are those who are incompetent but *look* competent and those that look competent and are competent. To know the difference you have to have some competence yourself, so the point I’m making (as you are) is that the more experience you get with social media the more easily you’ll be able to spot those sites/people that really know what they’re doing and those that are wannabes.
