I see one in every three people I come across today, believing in the one mythical fallacy that’s floated around since the birth of Twitter, that the “larger the number” of followers you have, the more traffic you can get from a Twitter based Internet Marketing campaign.
Absolutely wrong. There is not a word of truth in that myth, and having even a million random followers will never beat having say 100 targeted, loyal, fairly active followers.
Here’s why:
If you use Twitter yourself, you’re probably following a few people too. Keyword “people”. Twitter followers are people, just like subscribers on an email list are “people” before “email addresses”. When you have a number of followers on Twitter, it becomes imperative that you establish a relationship with them, a relationship that strengthens your foundation in the niche of “people” who are following you, as a person of authority and benefit to them, otherwise those followers will always be just another one of many followers who form the total “number” of followers you have and nothing more.
Having “real” Twitter followers vs. “spam” followers is CRUCIAL to your Internet Marketing campaign.
It sounds like quite an exhaustive effort to go about establishing a relationship with each and every one of your followers, because there may just be too many of them, or they may belong to several different niche markets that you have no idea about because you weren’t looking at who they were or what they were into when you chose to follow them back, or weren’t bothering to weed out and delete/unfollow any new organic followers who didn’t belong to any niche markets you take an interest in and would genuinely like followers from.
Follow Twitter Users in your “Niche”. Your Internet Marketing future depends on it.
Don’t do this, and you will always find yourself scratching your head because you’ll never know why you don’t get any results despite having a seemingly large number of followers on Twitter. What I’ve just described above is one of the most common dilemmas facing Twitter users who are using the service specifically as a tool in their Internet Marketing arsenal, for traffic, promotion of themselves or their products, etc. It’s because most people using Twitter as an Internet Marketing tool are not being meticulous enough to study their follower-ship, see if organic followers that have recently chosen to follow you and whom you are following back, are even remotely related to your areas of interest.
Why is this important? Because if your follower-ship is not targeted to your niche, you’re wasting time using Twitter as an Internet Marketing tool altogether. Having someone interested in engineering alternative chocolate chip recipes is hardly someone you want to follow if your soul interests lie in people who are involved in Search Engine Optimization, for example 😉
Twitter can be massively powerful medium for generating traffic back to your sites and products, IF you take the time to research your followers and see if they’re even in your niche. If you are an expert in Internet Marketing SEO Techniques, for example, you have a tonne of more chances at generating highly targeted, high quality traffic back to your site by sending out regular tweets if your followers are also in the SEO niche, than if they were Pastry Chefs interested in learning new techniques to incorporate sweet potatoes into their desserts 😉
As exhaustive and tiring as it sounds, as lazy as you feel about actually getting off your back-side and doing something about what I’ve just described above, it is absolutely crucial that you start doing this if you want to succeed at Internet Marketing using Twitter.
Would you want people on your email list who want to hear about chocolate chip cookies if your emails were all about the latest email marketing strategies?
No right?
I rest my case, the case that is the same with Twitter.
Make sure you start studying your followers as of today. There are plenty of automated software tools out there now that tell you what niche markets your followers are in, The Internet Time Machine being one of the most famous and hugely successful examples. By studying your followers, you can learn what they’re interested in and what not, and target your Internet Marketing campaigns at them individually in interesting new ways, making sure each of your followers gets a piece of you that is in tune with their tastes 🙂

Hey, Ali!
Just wanted to let you know that the breadcrumbs on your blog are not working as they should. Instead of an arrow, some weird HTML-code is showing. You ought to get that fixed anytime soon, otherwise you’re not getting the breadcrumbs in the Google Search Result Pages 😉

Thank you for the heads up. I will look into it..
